As domestic tourists resumed their trips in September, the hotel industry began to recover a little
Phnom Penh (MGO) - Mrs. Khay Chenda, Vice President of the Hotel Association, stated on September 24th, 2021, that hotels in Cambodia have seen a steady increase in visitors in recent months as local tourists resume after a pause since the beginning of the year when the sector had dropped to almost zero.
She explained that the increase was mostly in coastal destinations like Sihanoukville, Koh Kong, Kep, and Kampot, which got more tourists than other places like Phnom Penh and the northeastern area, while Siem Reap remained quiet.
She added that after the government announced the suspension of the Pchum Ben festival, it may limit the number of visitors planning to travel or visit relatives in another province will be unable to do so. However, she supports the government's decision to postpone this year's Pchum Ben festivities in order for Cambodia to combat Covid-19 and prepare for receiving international tourists in November.
"We lose a little money now, but we'll earn a lot of money in November. This is a smart strategy; We are looking forward to the next day, which is in November. International tourists will visit Cambodia, and we will be protected because we can fight against the spread of Covid-19." Mrs. Khay Chenda further confirmed.
Mrs. Chhay Sivlin, President of the Cambodian Association of Travel Agents, stated that the flow of tourists began to increase in September as a result of the government's decision to relax travel restrictions and allow travel from one province to another, allowing local tourists to travel different destinations, particularly in coastal and mountainous areas, boosting the local tourism industry. According to the Ministry of Tourism, Cambodia attracted 193,478 tourists in the first three weeks of September, including 3,078 domestic visitors.
